Costa Rican sights like the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano or Volcan Arenal are surrounded by natural parks, cloud forests, or natural reserves like Monteverde that provide shelter for wildlife and exotic nature in Central America including rare and endangered species of birds, jaguars, pumas, toucans, among many more.

These areas are home to thousands of species of plants, butterflies, amphibians, reptiles and marine animals and unspoiled Guanacaste beaches like Playa Grande, Tamarindo and Ostional are the place where nature lovers gather to watch the leatherback turtles reach the shores to lay their eggs in one of the most moving and spectacular natural scenes that can be observed in Guanacaste.

Guanacaste facts

Guanacaste is one of Costa Rica’s 7 provinces with a total area of 10,141 sq. km and a population of over 270,000 inhabitants. The warm and dry weather stays at an average temperature of 85 F during the summer (dry season). The province capital, Liberia (LIR) is now home to the first International Airport in Guanacaste, receiving several commercial flights a week. A 20 minutes ride gets you from the Airport to the nearest Guanacaste beaches.

Guanacaste’s cultural history is rich: a big part of Costa Rica’s folkloric music and the most deeply rooted traditions such as the “corridas de toros” (bullfighting) come from Guanacaste. Another distinction Guanacaste boasts proudly is the appointment of the Guanacaste Conservation Area (Área de Conservación Guanacaste) as a Worldwide Heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for its outstanding value to humanity given that this is an area destined for conservation and restoration of the tropical dry forest in Central America and marine ecosystems that can only be found in this part of the planet.
